Democrats value life (Republicans devalue life)

by: William Allen Simpson

Fri Jul 11, 2008 at 11:41:09 AM EDT

We need a series of TV (and/or radio) advertisements that give people a reason to vote Democratic. Probably not by the Obama campaign, which is still working to introduce Obama himself.

Today's AP article shows that the Republicans reduced their value of human life by 12% -- a drop of nearly $1 million from just five years ago.

American life worth less today

Of course, the calculations are a cynical Republican ploy to avoid issuing regulations for clean air.

"It appears that they're cooking the books in regards to the value of life." -- S. William Becker, executive director of the National Association of Clean Air Agencies

"It's hard to imagine that it has other than a political motivation." -- Dan Esty, a senior EPA policy official in the administration of the first President Bush and now director of the Yale Center for Environmental Law and Policy

But most folks certainly feel viscerally that their own lives have less economic value now.  We should be able to make a convincing case that the Democratic Party actually values individual lives more than Republicans.

Pro-Life Label (4.00 / 2)
This kind of thing just goes to show that the Democratic Party currently is the true pro-life party (at least compared to Republican Party). It's time to reclaim the label "pro-life" beyond its current, narrow focus on the single issue of abortion.

Granted, it might be hard to push regulatory cost-benefit analyses as a major campaign issue. One the other hand, if we could make, say, capital punishment and the environment into additional "life" issues, that would put many Democrats on the pro-life side on 2 -- or, yes, sometimes 3 -- out of 3 issues. (War would be another obvious life issue, but neither party can claim much of an overall moral high ground on it, with some individual exceptions of course.)

So I am going to out myself: I am voting Democratic because I am pro-life, not in spite of it.

(I'll leave it as an exercise to come up with what that leaves the Republican Party. Anti-life is the obvious answer, but surely there is a more creative and catchy label than that.)

How about....? (4.00 / 1)

Pro-Life Candidate (4.00 / 1)
I'm a member of the 11th Congressional and there's a candidate in my district, Larkin, running against McCotter who openly admits to being an avid pro-life candidate.  I can appreciate the honesty, but I don't know that it will help his campaign.  I can assure you he's a better choice than the other primary candidate, Ed Kriewall -- he's quoted in my local paper saying that he voted for Bush twice!

I just don't understand how during a Presidential cycle the Democrats couldn't recruit a more formidable candidate.  Obama is going to bring some long coattails, why couldn't a real contender jump on?

hey there fellow 11th sufferer! (0.00 / 0)
Couldn't agree more about the candidates we have as of now.  I once asked Governor Granholm to run when her term is up, since she lives in Northville.  Maybe the first gentleman will be interested?

Especially here in Livonia, Right-to-Life is a powerful force in the 11th.  We need to educate people beyond the usual rhetoric and show how GOP policies have failed to protect life or reduce abortions.

Did you exchange a walk-on part in the war for a lead role in a cage?
