Who should primary Dingell? --Hieftje, Kolb, or Rivers? Vote

by: David Boyle

Mon Sep 10, 2007 at 02:25:58 AM EDT

  I see John Dingell and his wife Debbie seem to be adamant on the early primary that violates DNC rules, and, curiously enough, would also probably help Hillary, the candidate Debbie (who is sort of close with General Motors) favors, I believe. (And a candidate, moreover, who hasn't attacked auto industry failure on global warming like Obama has.)
  Well, who should give Michigan the chance of having a new congressperson, and congressperson's wife, in the 15th District?

  Suggest your own, but here are three options:

1) John Hieftje, Democratic mayor of Ann Arbor;

2) Chris Kolb, former Democratic state representative from Ann Arbor (53rd District);

3) Lynn Rivers, former Democratic congresswoman, who ran against Dingell in 2002.

  I know the three above are a little heavy on the western side of the district, but feel free to suggest others from Dearborn or wherever.

  Michigan doesn't need a rulebreaking early primary, it needs a reformed auto industry, and a serious turnover in its Democratic (and Republican) leaders. Unless you feel that Michigan Democratic leadership really is the best possible leadership available...

  The sign of a flourishing Democratic Party. So careful, you might get what you wish for!!

none.

Polls should be mutual exclusive and exhaustive...otherwise you are pushpolling.

  Again, feel free to recommend other possible candidates!

Do you even know what the defintion of a push poll is? (0.00 / 0)
Think before you type.  He is limiting the choice of folks in his poll but that is far from being a push poll.  Don't throw around terms you don't understand.

You're kidding, right? (4.00 / 1)
I hope everybody who's against Michigan moving up remembers that they thought it was better to support party rules than to be involved early.  And please no whinning about the nominee when other states make the decision for us.

As far as a primary against Mr. Dingell, seems like you've got an axe to grind against someone who for his entire life as stood up for working men and women across the country.  Or should we just ignore things like his introducing and suporting universal healthcare legislation decades not years before it came cool, support for the auto industry which really was suport for working families like mine who some people on this blog seem to be willing to throw under the bus, and strong arming the feds to help clean up the rouge river.

Rivers?  Been there done that and people picked Dingell. If I remember correctly it wasn't even close.  Kolb?  I say we run him against Brater if she's not term limited.  Hieftje?  Don't know him, but I'm sure he's more interested in waiting for a seat to open up due to term limits than take on Dingell.

Finally, for over 25 times people have had the chance to pick someone other than Mr. Dingell to represent them and for over 25 times they have picked him.

He's gotten worse (0.00 / 0)
  Strom Thurmond won a lot of terms too.
  Ding's not been all bad, but letting the auto industry further decay is not a long-term solution to Michigan problems, though it may paper over the cracks for a while to stave off the "time and trouble" of reforming.

  He's also willing to hurt the national Party, and the whole country, to safeguard his corporate funders (e.g., early primary may produce a grateful winner Hillary who'll axe CAFE standards and put a Dingell on her staff/Cabinet), one is tempted to say. Sad ending note for a man who used to be respected more widely.

This is the dumbest thread (4.00 / 1)
ever started.  Ever.

Because... (0.00 / 0)
  the three challenger Dems I mentioned are such terrible leaders??

[ Parent ]
Dumbest thing I have ever read. (0.00 / 0)
Well to begin with none of them are terrible leaders but all three are unelectable to Congress.

  Kolb is a terrific public servant who would be a real asset in Lansing right now but is unelectable to the broader 15th district.  Rivers?  well I think she proved she was unelectable in that district. And the third person no one has ever heard of before.

Well, (0.00 / 0)
  Kolb may not be easily electable for various reasons, perhaps;
  Rivers, wasn't electable previously but things change; and
  Hieftje could use more name rec, but it could be done maybe!

  Thanks for your comments!!

None of the Above (4.00 / 1)
But be advised: The Dingell situation should be topic number one once the budget crisis is settled.  Debbie Dingell has been very busy of late behind the scenes.  She recently had lunch with a high ranking female judge and made her intentions to run for the 15th CD very clear.  Anyone who knows Debbie Dingell knows she is not qualified to be a Member of Congress (Although she already thinks she's one anyway) much less a WSU Board Member. She is already setting the table for her own run and acting as if the congressional staff is her own.  She is not a good person and would be a horrible Member of Congress.

The party would be well served by having an energetic and fresh leader take over the 15th when the district opens, and that new person does not have the name Dingell.  The blog world can help to lead the discussion of how the transition should go and have a quality primary instead of an orchestrated takeover by a truly disgusting person who married a name.
